So You Want a Web Presence

Most newcomers to web business don't have a clue what to do when it comes to getting up and running on the World Wide Web.

Understandably, it appears to be an overwhelming and confusing task. Questions arise as to how much will it cost and how long will it take. I am here to tell you, it is not as bad as some make it to be.

Part of the confusion comes about because many newcomers meld "Why Do I Want a Web Presence" to "How Do I Get a Web Presence." Both are separate processes.

Regarding the "Why" involves decisions as to what you will do with your Website: Sell products or services, create a blog, create a personal or family website (non-commercial), etc. Once you determine the "Why" part, then you can move into the "How."

So, how do you get a Web Presence?

Well, it involves a process. That process involves:

1. Researching and Registering A Domain Name
2. Getting a Host Provider
3. Designing a Website

I will explain each process in more detail and highlight reasonable cost expectations.

Researching a Domain Name
A domain name is that google.com, yahoo.com, 1clickdvd-copy.com, and digitaldrake.com names that people type into a web browser. If you are serious about making money online, I highly recommend that you get your own dot.com domain name. There are several good reasons for this: (1) They are cheap and easy to get, as opposed to several years ago. A dotcom (yoursite.com) domain name will cost you anywhere from $9.99/year to $35/year (depending on where you shop).

This annual fee is akin to renting; as long as you pay the annual fee, the domain is yours and no one else can get it. You also have the option of "renting" or "registering" your domain in 2, 3, 5, or 10 year pops rather than 1 year.

Your first step is to conduct research to see if the domain you want is available. This is very easy to do. You can go to GoDaddy.com or HostGator and use their search tool. The search tool will tell you if the domain name you want is available. Be advised that every name in the English dictionary is taken, you will have to use your imagination when doing your research. If possible, try to keep your domain names as short as reasonably possible. Too, choose one that is memorable.

Once you have researched your domain name and found that it is available, you will need to find a host provider.

The Host Provider
Host providers are those companies who are magically connected to the Internet. They are the ones who will hold or "host" your website files (html, gifs, jpeg, etc). They rent - on a monthly basis - space on their servers. If you will have a small website, you will rent one of their smaller and cheaper packages. If you will have a very large website, you will rent one of their more expensive packages. For most, the cheaper hosting packages will suffice.

What can you expect to pay for hosting? Anywhere from $4.99/month to $59.00/month (or more for very large websites). As you can see, hosting really is not that expensive either; if you select a cheaper hosting package.

How does hosting work? Well, you purchase a hosting package, the host provider will provide you will login information to your hosting account (also known as server space), you log in, and upload your webpages to your server. That's it!

Bringing The Domain Name and Hosting Together
So far you have seen that you need a domain and a host provider as the first two steps to getting a web presence. The best part is that you can do all of the above in one place. You can research a domain, register a domain, and purchase hosting from one place: GoDaddy.com.

GoDaddy is the service I most recommend because they make it very easy; plus, their hosting packages are very reasonable and their service is reliable.

You now have one more step to complete before you will have a web presence.

Designing a Website
Having a domain name and hosting will do you know good if there is nothing uploaded to your server. Thus, you will need a website. Understand that having a domain name is not the same as having a website. A website are the web page files that you upload to your host server space.

If you do not know how to design a web site, hire someone to design one for you. Looking in the local phone book or newspaper for a web designer can be expensive. A better and cheaper option is to hire one online from one of the many "Hire-A-Programmer" websites such as Rent-a-Coder or Scriptlance.

All you have to do is go to these websites, sign up for a free account, post your requirement for a web designer, set a bidding price (what you are willing to pay), and web designers from all over the world will compete for your business. You select a web designer and he will start working on your web design project.

The web designer does not get paid until you are satisfied with the work.

You are not limited to hiring just web designers. You can hire persons to create graphic art such as logos and banners. In fact, you can hire programmers to do just about any project you can imagine.

I firmly believe in DIYS (Do It Your Self). Learn how to design your own websites using Frontpage or Dreamweaver. Take a course or purchase an instruction book. Also, learn how to create your own graphics using Adobe Photoshop. These are programs I use in the classes I've taught and I highly recommend learning how to use them if you plan on designing your own websites.

So, there you have it: Researching and Registering A Domain Name, Getting a Host Provider, and Designing a Website will get you a web presence.

Once you have your web presence, all you have to do is get people to visit your site.

This morning, September 9, 2008, I received a threatening email with the Subject Line: I am wait your reply. (This individual does not have a good command of the English language since this should have read "I await your reply" or something like that.)

The body of the email read:

I am tired of receiving messages containing malicious computer programs (viruses) from your e-mail address!!!

If within 1-2 days you do not stop sending messages to my e-mail address, I will have to address this issue to the Police!...

Today I received a hard copy of your data logs from my Internet service provider. The copy contains your IP address, logs of sending malicious programs and your e-mail address details...

I am sending you the copy of the document containing your data and logs of sending malicious programs as the proof of your fault!!!!!!

You must print the document containing the list of your data and logs of sending malicious programs and pass it on to your Internet service provider with, so that they could find out why the viruses are sent from your computer to my e-mail address!!!!

Ask your Internet service provider to resolve this problem!!!!

Do this now!!!

Once again!!! If you don't stop sending the letters, I will address to the Police and file a lawsuit against you!!!

The email contained an IPLOGS.zip attachment, if unzipped, contains an executable. DO NOT run the executable. In fact, delete the entire file and get it off your PC. This is a virus.

These are scam artists attempting to scare you that their complaint is real.

First of all, an ISP would never send you or anyone else an executable file.

If you buy into this scam and open that executable, your computer will get infected. How do you remove this menace? Well, the virus is new so the best thing I can advise is to update your antivirus and antispyware application and scan your computer.

Once I get a solution, I will get it out to you.

I am still very partial to Google, yet I kept migrating over to Viewzi. So, what specifically does Viewzi do?

Well, upon entering a search term or phrase, Viewzi presents you with options ob how you want to view the research results. Such as:

Why Do Most Network Marketers Fail?

Network marketing is Simple, but doing it the old way (i.e. cold calling people) is NOT easy.

Don't kid yourself!

Let me explain my view of why network marketing is notorious for having a 95% or higher failure rate..

Have you ever heard of Occam's razor?

It states that the simplest explanation for a phenomenon is usually the best. We'll use this theory to explain why more than 95% or more network marketers fail.

Ready?

Most network marketers fail because the marketing methods that they are taught don't work 95% or more of the time. So we're led to ask the next logical question, what are most fledgling network marketers taught?

Well, I can only speak from my experience, but what I was taught was to buy and cold call leads.

Now, I'm not going to say this doesn't work, but I will say is that after six months of cold calling leads for 3 hours a day with very little success this tactic doesn't work for me.

Honestly, unless you're natural born confident sales leader going into your network marketing career you'll probably have these same results.

Don't get me wrong some people are very good at cold calling leads, but most people aren't.

What happens to most people after they've spend thousands of dollars on leads with very little success after months of effort?

They run out of money. They get burned out and then . . .

They give up.

Another important factor contributing to why most network marketers fail is the type of leads they buy.

Why does the type of leads network marketers use make a difference?

Well . . .

Business opportunity leads, the leads most new network marketers are told to use, are generic. These leads answer an ad that just asks them if they want to be financially free or make money from home or something like that.

Well . . . of course they do!

But that doesn't mean they want anything to do with YOUR network marketing program.

When the average network marketer calls these generic business opportunity leads the leads don't know anything about the network marketer's business and for the most part honestly don't care.

This leads to the fledgling network marketer hearing a lot of "NOs".

Hearing NO all the time leads to quite a bit of self doubt, both about the network marketer's own ability and the validity of their association with their network marketing company.

Negative feelings begin to harbor and as I said before eventually the network marketer gives up, usually within 3-6 months.

The fledgling network marketer's perception of their business goes from one of opportunity to one of complete doubt and negativity.

Reality follows perception, so because the fledgling network marketer believes both themselves and their business as having little hope this becomes TRUE.

That's basically why 95% of network marketers fail if you asked me.

What are the successful people doing to create that success?

Is the product something that the majority of the public can afford?

Am I personally financial stable enough to start a new business?

What type of a monthly marketing budget will I have to set aside to be successful?

What are the conversion statistics for the marketing process?

Is the business truly duplicable?

What would be my break even point?

Is there a way to make money quickly with this business or is there a way that I can create a quick income in marketing this business?

Etc.

You see it's not just the opportunity that has to be correct. You TOO have to be correct for the opportunity and you have to be in a financial position to take advantage of the opportunity at hand.Way too many times I see people joining my business that jump in on a hope and a dream.They have barely enough money to pay for there monthly membership commitment and yet they still want to know the fastest way to grow their business for FREE.

When people get caught up in the emotion of opening the possibility for more in their life sometimes they don't think clearly. They think if they can just get themselves in they will get rich.

It's not just about getting yourself in.

Google Chrome - New Browser Giving IE a Run For The Money

Google has entered the realm of web browsers currently dominated by Microsoft's Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer is currently the most widely used web browser, with a 75% market share. I personally think Mozilla's FireFox a much better web browser; it is certainly faster and less buggy than IE.

This is a bold move by Google that could (and probably will) knock Internet Explorer off it's lofty perch.

Google's new browser, named "Chrome" was realized on September 2, 2008; and from preliminary inputs, it is off to a very promising start.

I installed it today and it looks and feels great. It will take a slight learning curve - all things new do.

There a few differences within Google Chrome that depart from your typical browser experience: (1) Instead of giving you a separate address bar and search box, Chrome combines the two. (2) You can create tabs to keep several pages open at the same time. The "new tab" page displays thumbnails of sites you visit often and lists recently bookmarked sites. (3) You can create shortcuts to any web-based program and leave them on your PC desktop, the Windows Start Menu, or Quick-Launch bar. (4) Chrome also lets you browse "incognito." That is, in a stealth-mode. Cookies of all of your sessions are not saved on your PC.

The face of traditional radio broadcasting - using a radio to listen to news, weather, sports, and music - is changing.

Large private broadcasters, as well as the U.S. Federal government, are pouring huge amounts of money into Internet streaming audio to reach listeners all over the world. Why?

Because operational costs are much cheaper. The monthly power bill to run high-powered transmitters; to maintain them; and pay qualified technicians are staggering. AM and FM stations have a limited footprint and only propagate so far. The Internet is everywhere. You and I can even start our own radio station in our house and reach people all over the world. Our cost: whatever we pay for our broadband access!

With that said ...

Here is a real neat utility that lets you search for, listen to, and record Internet streaming audio no matter where you are in the world. It is called RippedRadio.

For example, when I was living in Thailand, I used RippedRadio to attach to a home town radio station in Wisconsin as well as WLS in Chicago.

I also used RippedRadio to record some of the programming and it saves it as MP3. The best thing I like about RippedRadio is that I can search for my favorite music (Jazz) and look for commercial-free stereo radio stations and have RippedRadio record it. Each track is individually separated by title. My routine was to launch RippedRadio before I retired for the night and when I wake up in the morning, there are several hundred MP3s residing on my computer. Unbelievable!

RippedRadio has a built-in Audio CD creator were you can even create audio CDs from the MP3s you downloaded.

Does Your Computer Need a Boost?

Like it or not, that blazing fast piece of hardware you have in front of you will become obsolete in a few years. It won’t be able to run some of the newest applications, or run as fast as some of the newer hardware. This is the case for many people (including myself) who currently run on “less than favorable” hardware. So if you are looking to spruce up your computer a bit more, here are the top 5 things you should look at upgrading:

1. Your monitor While it won’t speed up your computer, a new monitor will generally make your user experience a lot better. If you bought a computer over 4-5 years ago, you will likely have a CRT monitor. The colors are usually not as vivid, they drain a lot of power, and the resolution is terrible. A new monitor will allow you to view webpages better, allow for more of a multimedia experience, and even provide more functionality with some monitors containing USB ports, Card Readers and Optical drives. Additionally, if your response time is better (from CRT’s to LCD’s) you may even have the illusion that pages are loading smoother and faster.

2. Your Hard Drive You can never have too much space, especially with the way technology is moving. That 40GB HDD you had 3 years ago just doesn’t compare to the type of storage you can get today. With more storage, you can hold more media files, run more applications, and even have the ability to dual boot your system. In addition, if you are able to buy a hard drive that spins at a faster rate (higher RPM), your data will load quicker, your OS will load quicker, and there won’t be as much lag with your system.

3. The motherboard This applies especially to people who bought their computer directly from a manufacturer. Some old motherboards can’t support the new technology of today, such as more advanced PSU’s to cool your Dual-Core processors, and the faster DDR2 memory as opposed to standard DDR. Upgrading your motherboard is a very involved process, and not for everyone. If you are up to the challenge, it will improve every aspect of your computer. More USB ports, faster data transmission, support for more optical drives, more RAM, and faster processors are just some of the things to look forward to.

4. Your RAM Often clichéd in the computer world is how much a RAM upgrade will do for your computer, especially for those thinking of running Vista (or any modern day OS). The best metaphor to compare this to is to think of your RAM as your desk. The more desk space you have, the more papers, office supplies, printers, and other hardware you can hold. With more RAM, you can have many programs open at once, call them into view quicker, and generally improve the speed of every application. The best thing about installing RAM is that it’s cheap, and easy for the novice computer user to do. It can turn an old computer with 256MB of RAM into a quick multitasking machine with a 1GB upgrade.

5. The Processor If you plan to upgrade only one thing in your old computer, this would be it. The processor is what controls everything on the computer, so naturally, more power is never a bad thing. The best analogy here is a car. With a bigger engine, everything runs smoother and quicker. With a new processor, loading times will be shorter, pages will load faster, your computer will boot up and turn off faster… it really is something that will improve every aspect of your computer. Even for older computer that can’t support Dual-Core technology, you can buy extremely fast Pentium 4 chips for under $50. There is not a single part of your computer that will suffer, and all parts will thank you.

It will come in handy when you join certain affiliate programs. It is through PayPal many of them will pay you; it is really convenient.

Newbie Cash Machine?

Here is an article I wanted to share with my readers. For those of you looking for a great way to supplement your income; here is is. I know first had, this works. Here is that article:

The insufficient income from my present job caused me to look for other ways from which I can earn money. I took to the internet to look for solutions to my problem. Amazingly, I stumbled the Zero 2 Riches program! Skeptical at first, I thought it too good to be true; claiming to be no-cost, but able to rake in substantial monetary gains.

Put Your Office in a USB Flash Drive!

If you are like me - a very mobile person - my computing life often does not always exist on
a laptop. Sometimes I just leave the laptop at home and carry around my 4GB USB flash drive.

I have loaded on my USB stick the most common applications I use such as: a word processor,
a spreadsheet application, a PDF reader, an email client, an FTP client, an HTML editor, a
web browser, an instant messenging client, an antivirus client, a text reader, an MP3 player
and a CD/DVD burner.

All of the applications I run on my USB stick are free and run directly from the USB device;
nothing is installed on the computer itself.

So, when I am traveling without my laptop, all I have to do is go to an Internet cafe, pop

What Do You Really Need To Make Money Online?

The first thing you need to make money online is the belief that you can. In the movie "The Shawshank Redemption" the old man Brooks wrote, "Dear fellas, I can't believe how fast things move on the outside. I saw an automobile once when I was a kid but now they're everywhere. The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry."

"The world went and got itself in a big damn hurry." That statement describes the way the so-called Internet Gurus are coming at you. They create a sense of urgency that you got to join some program now before it is too late. Or, they paint a picture of all of the thousands of dollars you will make quickly if you join.

Well, that is not the real world of the Internet. I am not saying that there are not such programs out there that can make you a lot of money quickly; I am saying that so-called Internet Gurus do not prepare you for the world of the Internet like a parent prepares a child for the real world.

Most of you have heard the stories about persons getting involved in one program after another only to be met with failure. Why is that? Because Internet-wise, they are immature; because they were drawn in with the hopes and prospects that they will make it big quickly. It is akin to a person buying a lottery ticket each week and never winning. This brings me to my second point.

The second thing you need is a level head. Don't waste your hard earned dollars without first thoroughly investigating an online venture. Google the venture to see what others are saying about it? How old is the program? Has it already saturated the Internet? What is it's support track record? It's pay out? Most often common sense and a sixth sense will guide you as to whether a program is worth your time and money.

You need a mentor. You need someone who has really gone around the block on the Internet and knows the neighborhood. A mentor is like a physical trainer who will not lead you astray or let you bite off more than you can chew. A mentor will help you achieve a reasonable goal in a reasonable amount of time. A mentor will not only help you "loose the weight and pack on muscle", a mentor will put you on the path to keep it off. Get my drift. In the world of the Internet, a mentor will help you find what program is right for you to reach a financial goal, a mentor will prepare you to sustain that income.

The third thing you will need if you want to make money online is a domain name. What is a domain name? It is that www.yourwebsite.com name people type in their web browser. Domain names are very easy to get and they are cheap to.

The fourth thing you need is a host provider. A host provider is a service that hosts or holds the files that make up your website. I spend anywhere from $9.95 to $29.95 (my high content sites) for a good host provider. GoDaddy.com has very good and cheap hosting packages.

You will find that services like GoDaddy have mechanisms in place that will let you search for a domain name, register that domain name, and purchase hosting all from one place. They make it easy for you.

Fourth, you need a website; that is, content. View your content as material your visitors will be interested in. It could be a hobby, a product or service, a blog (like DigitalDrake.com), an affiliate program you belong to; anything.

Fifth, you need visitors. In other words you need traffic. Without traffic, it is impossible to make money online. If Walmart had no visitors in their stores, they would make no sales. How To Clean Up and Speed Up Your PC

Yesterday, a friend called me and asked me if I could look at his computer; that it was running mighty slow. (Once the word is out that you understand and can work on computers, friends, co-workers, and relatives will be like an umbilical cord that is difficult to severe. You become a source of free perpetual computer support) Really reluctant to work on anyone's computer - since I am usually very busy - I asked him if he was running updated antivirus and spyware applications. "What's that," he says. Oh! Oh! application.

Rather than have him disassemble his PC system I go over to his house to take a look. No, he wasn't running either an antivirus or antispyware. :(

He couldn't afford to purchase an antivirus or anti spyware applications so I directed him to download two free applications that should serve him well:

1. Avast Antivirus Home Edition 4.1
2. Spybot Search and Destroy

I had to first deal with the problem at hand: a very sluggish computer before installing anything.

Reasoning he probably has viruses and spyware imbeds on this computer, I went over to McAfee's Threat Center at http://vil.nai.com/VIL/stinger/ and downloaded a free application called Stinger.

Stinger is a stand-alone utility used to detect and remove specific viruses. It is not a substitute for full anti-virus protection, but rather a tool to assist you when dealing with an infected computer system.

Well, I ran Stinger and boy did he have infections! Hundreds of them! Stinger was able to remove 85% of the viruses on his computer. Making progress!

At this point I downloaded and installed Avast Antivirus Home Edition 4.1 and Spybot Search and Destroy. After first updating and running these two applications, I was able to remove all detected viruses and spyware on my friends machine. What a big difference that made in his PCs performance.

Next, I had to educate him: "Keep your antivirus and antispyware application definition files updated and use the applications at regular intervals and scan for and remove viruses and spyware." (Blank stare. He was probably thinking, "Why should I have to do these things, I have you?")

I was on a roll.

I told him about a cheap application I have used for years and run it on the computer networks I am reasonable for at work. The application is called Acronis Privacy Expert Suite 9.0. Every PC user should have this application installed. There is very good reasons to do so.

Windows 2000 Professional, Windows XP, and Windows Vista all have directories that are hidden to you by default. Some of these directories keep a record of all of your PC activity! Bet some of you didn't know that!

These directories accumulate files that reveal your Internet activity and surfing habits; what applications you opened on your computer system; what files you have been working on using the various Windows applications; and your PC activity.

Anyone - an employer, family member, someone with malicious intent towards you - could gain access to these directories an see what you have been doing. Additionally, these directories become very bloated, in time, and can slow down your computer and consume a lot of hard drive space if not regularly flushed out.

Acronis Privacy Expert Suite 9.0 is an integrated software suite that provides confidentiality and protects PCs connected to the Internet. It will safely remove spyware, malware, it will flush out the contents of those hidden directories, protect your Internet and computing activity privacy, completely remove all traces of your PC system activities, stops pop-ups when surfing the web, and increases PC performance. Acronis Privacy Expert Suite 9.0 does a whole lot more as the video I put together for you below shows.
